The South-East Asian States (ASEAN States) become the third major power centre in Asia, alongside China and India. This group includes ten countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Brunei.

Together they have about 600 million inhabitants. This is only about half as much as in India, but foreign direct investment in the ASEAN states is already three times as high as in India.
The “Asian Century” does not only refer to China – the Southeast Asian group of states ASEAN is also part of this fastest growing region in the world.

Despite an average annual growth rate of five percent and a six percent share of world trade, the ASEAN region is still overshadowed by China. But it offers many more opportunities and perspectives than most German entrepreneurs seem to know.

The German economy can score points in the Asean region particularly with green technologies of the future – because in view of the economic dynamism there is an enormous need for environmentally friendly, energy-efficient solutions for sustainable growth.

However, the German economy is also encountering increasingly stronger competitors in Asia. In future, it will therefore be more important than ever to establish cooperation and partnerships, especially in technology, innovation and research and development.
